When people think of parks in Arizona they typically think of the Grand Canyon. But this well-rounded state has a lot more to offer. One of Phoenix’s little known secrets is Papago park AZ. This desert park houses some of the world’s most beautiful sandstone buttes, gorgeous plants, and a wide variety of unique wildlife.
Papago Park, AZ’s hidden jewel, is also home to a number of other popular Phoenix attractions. The Phoenix Zoo and the Desert Botanical Gardens both rest on this beautiful location. The papago park golf course is a great place to relax and get some exercise while enjoying the desert park location. And for those who just can’t get enough of sports, a modern sports complex resides at Papago Park AZ, as well. Available recreational activities include extensive hiking trails, an archery range, a 1.7 mile Exer-Course, fishing lagoons, a softball complex, and an orienteering course.
Papago Park AZ also offers a historical attraction, featuring the tomb of former governor George Wiley Hunt. Governor Hunt, who was born in 1859, proudly served his state and his country for seven non-consecutive terms. Hunt's tomb, is a pyramid tomb that can be seen from just about any part of Papago Park AZ, giving strollers the additional opportunity for an educational experience as they enjoy the beauties of nature.
The history of Papago Park AZ dates back to 1879, when the area was made into an Indian reservation for the Maricopa and Pima tribes. The function changed drastically, however, during World War II, when the US government converted it into a German Prisoner of War camp. Following the war the grounds continued to be used by the US military; however, in 1959 the state of Arizona purchased the property to turn it into what became known as Papago Park. AZ has not regretted the decision.
Today Papago Park AZ remains one of Phoenix’s most popular attractions for tourists and citizens alike. Many people travel from out of state to witness the gorgeous sandstone buttes and the amazing wildlife. However, the local populous tends to use the park more as a retreat from the daily grind. The park’s lengthy trails and natural vegetation offer a much needed escape from the noise and busyness of city life. The Zoo and the Botanical Gardens also draw a large crowd of people, both young and old, making Papago Park AZ one of the most popular parks in Arizona.
