Phoenix Light Rail Riders
Thursday, November 19 2009 15:40
October ridership numbers for phoenix light rail have been announced and it looks like METRO is a hit with residents of the greater Phoenix area. October was an all time high for ridership numbers on the METRO. Month over month, ridership on Phoenix light rail increased by 70,000 riders to a new all time high of 1,124,924 riders which averages out to about 40,772 people per day on weekdays. October also had the highest one day ridership of 50,262 riders on October 2, which exceeded the previous record on May 13, 2009 when President Obama spoke at the Arizona State spring commencement.
This is great news for Phoenix residents. Continued Phoenix light rail adoption will hopefully lead to reduction of traffic, reduced pollution and hopefully a decrease in stress levels for Phoenix residents as they shed their dependence on cars and spend less time in traffic. If ridership continues to grow, Phoenix may benefit from future METRO expansion plans to this line and with any luck there may be demand for other side lines to expand the reach of Phoenix light rail.
This continued increase in ridership is significant, these ridership levels are quickly catching up with other successful light rail projects such as the Los Angeles Blue Line and the Salt Lake City light rail which first opened in 1999. At this rate, Phoenix light rail will possibly exceed Salt Lake city’s light rail ridership numbers in another month or two. Much like Phoenix residents, initial reaction to the Salt Lake City light rail system was skeptical, but all indication show that Phoenix light rail will be a success.
